Matthew Ferguson is a fiction writer (not be confused with a fictional writer), who specialises in turning coffee into stories. To support his writing efforts he is also an information security professional. Currently living in the Highlands of Scotland. He enjoys writing short stories and working on his first novel, Intermission. Hidden away in the Highlands he also enjoys cooking, weightlifting, and speaking in the third person. Favourite foods include the illustrious avocado, unhealthy quantities of cheese, and homemade chicken curry. Favourite exercises include trudging dramatically in the rain and the barbell deadlift.

Intermission

Intermission is a captivating, character-driven mystery thriller set in the enigmatic city of Los Morado. A vast and isolated metropolis on the north-eastern coast of America, known for its distinctive dark jazz, peculiar weather patterns, and rich fusion cuisines. The city's isolated geography has made it an ideal hub for the world's most successful businesses to conduct their most secretive projects, giving rise to an unparalleled culture where work and play collide with unmatched intensity. Constant dark weather and shadows from the surrounding mountains create an atmosphere where it’s often blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

The story revolves around reclusive private investigator Lilith, and the city's most acclaimed celebrity singer, Absence Cabrera, as they forge new and unexpected bonds in the aftermath of a senseless tragedy. Together, Lilith and Absence must navigate their personal struggles and the dark underbelly of the merciless Los Morado.

Winter Update!

🌟 Still going 📚

So I'm on draft three of Intermission. Draft one, like all first drafts was unhinged. Draft two became workable. My intension with draft three is to make it a book worth reading. I'm not happy with the current quality, but I'm happy I captured various themes and have the foundations of the characters in place to improve on.

The rate of editing has massively slowed down as this year Forrow (the consultancy I founded) really took off, and with staff to look after they come first.

Here's to getting draft three done by this time next year! 🙂

Winter Update!

🌟 Exciting Progress on my novel 'Intermission' 📚

I'm thrilled to share that over the Christmas period, I completed the plan for my novel 'Intermission'. Starting with a plot and story plan two years ago, the narrative has evolved significantly as I learnt more about the characters. This Christmas, I finally planned the real end of 'Intermission', a challenge that was more demanding than anticipated!

Anyway, I've now reached 94,000 words of my 120,000-word target, including the first part of Chapter Ten in Act Four (the final act!). The break was a perfect opportunity to refine the plot and ensure a satisfying conclusion for both characters and readers.

I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has inquired about the book and offered support. Your interest and encouragement mean a great deal to me.

I'm delighted to announce that I'm nearly halfway through at +51,000 words.

Today, I'm revealing a sneak peek at one of my key characters, Lilith the city detective.

With Lilith, I've been enjoying the opportunity to research and learn more about detective structures in films and novels. Specifically how you can bend and break predictable genre structures to great effect, like with the movie Chinatown :D
